HP Envy 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

A week or so ago my Envy 5544 indicated low tricolour ink.  I changed the cartridge for my spare Instant ink tri-colour cartridge and got the message to "Remove and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge etc." and the display indicated the tricolour cartridge.  I did andgot thesamemessage so I cleanedthe contacts, ran HP Print and Scan Doctor, reloaded the firmware. and went through all the steps in the guide twice with no success.  I had contact from a very helpful assistant at HP who sent out a new cartridge.

I installed the new cartridge today and got the message "Removethe and reinstall the indicated ink cartridge, making sure that it is correctly installed, and then touch OK".  This time no ink cartridge is indicated.  I have been through the cleaning, reinstalling the firmware, uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and all the software again without success.

I am still getting the same message but this time no problem cartridge is indicated on the screen.  The Instant Ink Information tab tells me that the cartridge is "Unknown".

I need to print important documents this weekend for a lawyers appointment about my late mother's estate for Monday so it looks like farewell HP5544 and also farewell HP.  Fortunately it is Black Friday I should be able to get a reliable (non-HP) printer

Update - the printer now tells me it is the tri-colour cartridge after yet another firmware and software installation.  I am getting fed up.

Update again - overnight we had a short power cut.  Now the printer recognises the old tri-colour cartridge (empty) and one of the new ones but shows it almost empty but the other new one is still showing as "unknown".  At least I'll get some printing done for Monday.
