HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I suddenly got an error message on my HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 printer "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. To resume printing remove continuous ink system and install original HP or compatible cartridges". It is highlighting my Cyan and Yellow cartridges. I have only ever used original HP cartridges, new. I have swapped out both cartridges with new ones and still get the message. I've uninstalled and reinstalled my printer. Still the message remains. This happened all of a sudden. It will not allow me to print. What is a continuous ink system?

Any ideas on a fix?

Thanks!

Hi @JSPS2025,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the error message "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems. you've always used genuine HP cartridges.

Here are steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Verify the Cartridges

  • Check the cartridges: Make sure the cyan and yellow cartridges are genuine HP cartridges for your printer model. Counterfeit cartridges or damaged ones can trigger this error.
  • Inspect the chips and contacts: Look for dirt, damage, or ink smudges on the cartridge chips and printer's contacts. Clean gently with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

2. Reset the Printer

  1. Turn the printer off.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

This simple reset might clear the error.

3. Use the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS) Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Open the printer’s EWS:
    1. Find the printer’s IP address from the printer’s display or the HP Smart app.
    2. Open a web browser and enter the IP address.
  • Check for updates:
    1. Navigate to the Web Services or Firmware Update section.
    2. Install any available firmware updates.

4. Bypass Cartridge Error

Sometimes, the printer firmware retains a flag from the old cartridges:

  1. Remove all cartridges from the printer.
  2. Close the printer lid and wait for the "Cartridges Missing" error.
  3. Reinstall the cartridges one at a time, starting with cyan and yellow, and see if the error clears.

5. Factory Reset

  1. On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Settings.
  2. Confirm and let the printer reset.

Note: This will erase custom settings and may require reconnecting to WiFi.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I am getting this same message and I tried all the things listed and still get it.  It started with the yellow and now I am getting it with the cyan.  I Updated Firmware, did the reboot and the cartridge reboot by taking them all out and I am still getting the message.  I am have always used genuine HP products purchased at Office Depot.
