[edit] So what is the situation in Europe and the UK regarding this? Is it still illegal in these countries to buy ink from a third party supplier and top up black and colour cartridges with a syringe?
Cos I am severely tempted to do so. Recently bought a secondhand Envy 4500 which seemed to be in good condition. But the black cartridge printhead appeared to have dried up and had got blocked and nothing I did could fix it (even though the ink level said about 70%).
So I bought a new genuine 301 cartridge which cost a wallet-busting 15 EUR (more than half of what I paid for the printer!). The packaging said it contained 3ml of ink and would be good for approx 190 pages. But I only got about 50 pages of medium content black text in DRAFT MODE (no graphics or pictures) with an estimated 10-20% of page coverage. And then it ran out!!! [edit]
Even more galling was I got an on-screen message (on my PC) with words to the effect of "Thank you for buying a genuine HP cartridge - Click here for your free gift", but which took me to a web page where there was no gift. [edit]
I am therefore in a dilemma about how to proceed without breaking any laws.
