Three of the last four HP564XL black cartridges I have purchased for my HP Photosmart 5520 printer have resulted in a  message as soon as installed.  I am notified that "one or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged."  I have ordered from HP and Amazon online, and purchased the last one at Walmart.  These cartridges are not cheap!  I don't know whether to give up on my nice printer or what.  How can I tell if the printer or ink is defective?

The same thing happened to me, only I had purchased the ink cartridge from WalMart.

I found out today that they no longer accept returns on HP cartridges!

After the error messages, I installed a different cartridge that worked.

BUT after close inspection of the first package, I discovered that someone had opened the inner wrapper and had taped it shut (very well), so I think that someone returned a used cartridge to WalMart & they put it back on the shelf for me to buy. The outside box looked fine! I guess I'm forced to buy from HP, which is more expensive than WMT by $2. Plus I'm out the $38.97 for the defective one.

No, you cannot take any opened HP Cartridge back to Walmart and get a replacement. I just had the same thing happen to me and Walmart refuses to take it back and told me I have to go to HP to get a replacement. It's my understanding that HP will not replace it either. So HP says take it back to Walmart, and Walmart says to take it back to HP. What A RIPOFF! Sounds like a case for the BBB!
