HP Office Jet 6600
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Hi, I am getting a message on my HP Officejet 6600 printer "Depleted cartridge need to be replaced". It is for only the yellow ink and I already changed the ink twice but still same message means it is not a problem with the cartridge. I tried to turn the printer on and off 5 times after taking the ink out. I also tried disconnecting the power cord and then connecting again. Nothing is helping.

@sh34 Welcome to HP Community!

The printer is designed to print when the ink is low, but once the ink is completely depleted, the printer will also stop printing. The reason behind this is because the depleted cartridge will damage the printhead of the printer if tried to print.

Also, there is no way of tricking the printer about cartridge being depleted. As far as I understand, the ink level is either measured by using a microchip in the cartridge.

Step 1: Check from the printer software on a Windows

Check estimated ink or toner levels for a printer connected to a Windows computer.

  1. Turn on the printer and make sure that it is in a ready state and is connected to the computer.

  2. Search Windows for HP, and then click your printer name from the list of results. If HP Solution Center displays in the results, click it.

Estimated ink or toner levels display on the home window of the printer software.

If you could not access your ink levels, continue to the next step.

For more assistance, please follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Printers - How to Check Ink or Toner Levels

Hence, please use all new cartridges and check the printer functionality.

You can employ the steps I provided in my above message to limit the use of color ink cartridges.

Keep me posted, as I (Or a trusted colleague) shall follow-up on this case to ensure the concern has been addressed,

And your device is up and running again, only in case you don't get back to us, first!

As I said earlier, I changed the ink to the new one already but it did not change the message. It is still reading the cartridge with ink as depleted and showing the same with a cross. No ink level shown for yellow ink. I don't think you read my message just read the subject and answered.

@sh34 I had gone through the entire post, and the reason I suggested these steps is because you've mentioned that you've replaced the yellow ink cartridge only, whereas the printer wouldn't work with low ink on other cartridges as well, so you need to go through the suggested steps and ensure there's ink in all cartridges not just yellow.

I hope you understand.

Let me know how that pans out, after you've followed the steps from the links I had shared, as well.

Good luck.

Hi. I changed all of them now to the new set. It didn't change anything.

@Buffalo67 In that case, please check if the copier and the print diagnostic page works normally, if none of that works wither, this could be a hardware malfunction, keep us posted

It doesn't let me copy anything, print the diagnostic page or align the printer or clean the printhead.  Anything I try to do the same message appears "Depleted cartridge needs to be replaced to print Y"
