Hi there! Have this original question and a couple others.

First, every time I add an ink cartridge a test page prints automatically. Waste of ink from both black and color plus paper. I've looked in the settings and there doesn't seem to be a spot to change this setting. Can I?

Secondly, ok now assuming I have run out of black ink and have lots of color is there a way to just print in color for the time being till i get more black? A person SHOULD be able to right? Kinda makes sense to me.

And thirdly, Can your HP Tri Color Red/Blue/Yellow make black?

Thanks.

@TedBuvari, thanks for your prompt response and time.

I appriciate your efforts for writing back to us.

I understand your concern and situation.

We do have printers printing with a single cartridge mode. However, the printer you are using does not support single cartridge mode.

HP Officejet 2620
Hp-Envy-7640

And a few other printers use single-cartridge mode.

Hope this answers your query!

Take Care! 🙂

Hi! @TedBuvari, Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand you would like to know if your printer can print only with the black ink cartridges.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you make any changes to your printer?

Excellent description and a great diagnosis done. It is greatly appreciated.

You cannot stop a printer from printing a test page after the ink cartridge replacement.

As the printer need to align the ink cartridges to print. Without the printer alignment, you will have print quality issues with your printer.

Also, You cannot print by removing colour cartridges from your printer.

There are two printheads on this printer one is black and colour cartridges.

So the printer would need all the ink cartridges to be installed for printing.

If you want to minimize the use of color ink or print a photograph in grayscale, you can change the settings in the HP software to print with black ink only or grayscale.

  • Black & White or Black Ink Only: The printer uses only the black ink cartridge to produce a black & white print out. Any colors present in an original document or photo are converted to black. Select this setting when you want to print only with the black ink cartridge.

  • Grayscale: The printer uses a mix of color inks to produce a high quality black printout. Select this setting when you want high quality black & white documents or photos.

NOTE:

Some HP printers must have some ink of each color available to print. For these types of printers, the ink is used for periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.

However, you can Change the print settings to print with black ink only.

Print only black for one print job

Change the print settings to print with black ink only for single print jobs. The steps vary by printer model and operating system.

NOTE:

You must have the full feature printer software installed on your computer to change this print setting. Go to the Frequently asked questions section for more information.

  1. In your software application, click Print.

  2. Select your printer from the list of available printers.

  3. Click the option that opens the Printer Properties dialog box.

Depending on your software application, this button might be called Properties, Options, Printer Setup, Printer Properties, Printer, or Preferences.

  4. On the properties window, click the Paper/Quality or Features tab, depending on your software.

    • To print using only the black ink cartridge, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Black Ink Only.

      • Click the Black & White button.

        NOTE:

To use even less black ink at a lower quality, select the Draft quality setting when available.

    • To print high quality black & white documents or photos, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Print in Grayscale or High Quality Grayscale.

      • Click Print in Grayscale, and then select High Quality Grayscale.

        NOTE:

The printer uses a mix of black and color inks to produce a high quality black printout.

  5. Click OK, and then click Print to start the print job.

The printer prints the print job in black ink for this print job only.

Mr.Robot's reply - "I understand you would like to know if your printer can print only with the black ink cartridges."

Ted -" Not once in my original post did I ever mention that. Think this Robot is broken."

"Did you make any changes to your printer?"

"No I looked in the settings to find a setting to fix my issue."

"You cannot stop a printer from printing a test page after the ink cartridge replacement.

As the printer need to align the ink cartridges to print. Without the printer alignment, you will have print quality issues with your printer. "

"That's too bad. If I wanted to align the cartridges myself there should be an option to manually do it."

"Also, You cannot print by removing color cartridges from your printer.

There are two printheads on this printer one is black and color cartridges.

So the printer would need all the ink cartridges to be installed for printing."

"I can leave the empty black one in the slot and should be able to print with the color still. I should never have to NEED black ink if I have color to print with."

"We can put people in space but we can't make a printer that can print with just one cartridge if the other one is empty. Or make a multicolor ink be able to print alone.  Or even add settings so we can stop any senseless automation that wastes ink and paper."

Thanks.
