I can see I'm not the first one to have this problem but it seems to be HP's software not being correct for my Mac OS El Capitan. Hope someone can help.

Additional information.

The Align function from Hp Utility/All Settings/Align print Catridges prints out a page and I have made the selections and run it again/

Test page doesn't work. It seems to accept the instruction but nothing comes out.

CleanPrintheads: Cleaning Level 1 worked and sheet printed out

Cleaning Level 2 worked and a better looking image printed

Clean Back of Page Smear (I don't have one but trying it anyway); That worked

So given that the HP Utility works I'm going back to print something.

Oh No same error message again. and I also reinstalled the printer driver.

This is a MacBook Pro. Anything else to get some help?

I now have additional info. I have connected the 1010 printer to a MacMini running Catalina and the same error message occurs. Really hope someone can come to my help. Surely HP employees are looking at these pages.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

1.) Is there an antivirus software installed on your Mac? If yes, please try disabling it and check if it works. 2.) Are you using a USB hub?

Troubleshooting Steps –

1.) Go to System Information to check the if the USB is detected or not - a.) From the Apple menu, choose About This Mac. b.) Click System Report. c.) Under the Hardware heading on the left side of the System Information window, click USB. USB 3 devices appear under USB 3.0 Bus, and USB 2 devices appear under USB 2.0 Bus. The printer should be under the USB 2.0 Bus.

2.) Try a different port and cable if not detected. Check for any updates on mac.

3.) Run Disk Utility and check permissions.

To run the disk utility - 1. Open Finder: Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Open it. 2. Select your Macintosh HD on the left side, then click Repair Disk Permissions along the bottom. 3. Let it finish (20 minutes or so), then close Disk Utility.

Let me know if this helps.

First of all THANKS for finding my post. I'm relieved.

RE 1A. I don't believe I have any antivirus software running on this computer (the Mac Mini running Catalina) at this time.

Re 1B. All the USB ports on this MacMini are USB 3.0 ports. THis is from the Apple web site:

  • Two Thunderbolt 2 ports (up to 20 Gbps)
  • Four USB 3 ports (up to 5 Gbps)
  • HDMI port
  • SDXC card slot
  • Gigabit Ethernet port
  • Audio in port
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • IR receiver

I have attached a USB 2.0 USB Hub to give myself 2.0 ports and the printer is attached to this hub

here is the report from the system showing the printer is in a USB2 port:
