Deskjet 3752 not printing in b&w at all and printing very faded color

My sister gave my mom a new Deskjet 3752 last Christmas, and it has never worked correctly.  She really only wants to use it for making copies, but only blank paper comes out on the black and white print, and the color printing is patchy.  I did all the routine maintenance stuff (recalibrating, cleaning, level two cleaning), but nothing changed.  The indicators on the printer and on the screen say that there is plenty of ink.  I also changed the power cord to be in its own outlet rather than a power strip.  

She has a Mac but I'm a pc person and don't know the operating system.  It's about 2 years old.

When was the last time the printer was used?

Remove the black cartridge & touch the bottom to a damp paper towel, do you see any ink?
