Deskjet 6540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Up until a few days ago, Windows 10 and my Deskjet 6540 played well together!

Now, since the last recent Windows 10 update, the 6540 printer stopped working.

Windows 10 no longer recognizes the printer.

No Device manager entry.

Is there any way to get this printer working again?

It took the OS a while to recognize that I had unplugged and re-plugged the USB cable. I was expecting an immediate response, but it took several hours before Windows 10 told me that a previous driver install had failed and I should try the install again. I did the unplug and re-plug again and then got the New Hardware message and the 6540 was installed and is working perfectly.

Thanks for the help.

Hello, @BillyDick - Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! I'd be glad to be of your assistance!

I understand that you are unable to install the Deskjet 6540 printer. I am afraid that your printer is an older model and hence Windows 10 drivers are not available for this model.

I would recommend you use the Windows built-in drivers to tackle this issue. Windows 10 OS comes with the built-in printer drivers. Simply turn on the printer and unplug the USB cable and then re-connect the USB cable from the printer to the PC. The drivers will be installed in 2-3 minutes. Go to Control panel - Devices and printers to check the printer entry and make it as default printer if needed.

Check http://hp.care/2nxKJv8 for additional instructions.

Those steps should do the trick, let me know the outcome!

Good luck 🙂

Thanks for the reply and glad that the issue is resolved by disconnecting the USB cable and reconnecting it as suggested.

Sometimes it takes longer than anticipated, but I am glad that the printer is working fine now.
