With a new black cartridge installed it only prints random parts of page, but with black cartridge removed it prints OK in backup mode with only color cartridge installed.  Problem was the same with old black cartridge, so I bought a new one, but it didn't help.  I've been through all the trouble-shooting steps given by HP to no avail.  Self-test report, B&W pages, and color pages all act the same way.  At one point, I got an error message indicating an unspecified problem with the black cartridge, but, as I said, a new one didn't help.

 

Deskjet F4140

It's hard-wired to my laptop by USB.

Laptop runs Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS (linux) & Firefox.
