I installed a new black (301) cartridge, and got incompatible message, but when I re-inserted the old cartridge, I also got the same message.
The cartridges were purchased from Argos, but are HP branded.
I recently (9th June) installed HP EPrint in an attempt to scan, but this didn't install correctly, so has been sent to Trash

Hi @Bogheadnomore,
Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that you get an "incompatible ink cartridge" error message on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One Printer.
This issue could occur if the electrical contacts on the cartridge or the printer are defective.
Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Ink Cartridge Errors
Let me know how this works.
You have a good day ahead.

I followed all the steps in the step by step guide, but it didn't work.
After the first clean of electrical contacts, I was still getting the incompatible message, but when I inserted the old (empty) black cartridge, it was ok.
I cleaned a second time, inserted the new cartridge, but still incompatible message.
I then reset the printer, but still incompatible message.
I had another black cartridge (not bought from Argos), and when I inserted this, the error message disappeared, and I was able to print.
I had bought this as a a twin pack with colour cartridge, and it was also a special deal to get two twinpacks, so I spent over £30. I've lost the receipt from Argos, so probably they won't accept a return.
Is there any way I can check (for example, using the bar code) if this is a genuine HP product??

Hi! @Bogheadnomore, I am the MrRobot. It looks like you were interacting with @Rainbow23, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.
I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.
Have you tried checking with different ink cartridges?
Please try performing a semi full reset on your printer and check if it helps.
Since the steps to perform semi full reset is confidential. I will send you the steps in a private message. Please watch your inbox for more information.
If the issue still persists after trying out the steps.
It is a hardware issue with the ink cartridge or the printer itself.
Please contact HP support for service options.

Let know if this helps!
Have a great day ahead! 🙂
