After working fine for 5 months, this message suddenly appeared... "This printer is not designed to use continuous ink systems.  To resume printing, remove continuous ink system and install original HP cartridges."

The printer still has, and has always had, the cartridges that it came with.

The message will not disappear with turning machine off, or unplugging for extended periods.  Diagnostic tests report that the printer is working fine, but printer will not even complete test printings.  Up and down arrows are only buttons that work on display panel.

Good Day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case regarding the printer having issues with ink cartridge errors. I will be delighted to assist you here.

Superb description, brilliant troubleshooting and terrific observations made before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

To assist you with accurate information I would require more information regarding this.

  • Did this happen after a power surge or outage?
  • Did you check again by changing the ink cartridges?
     
  • For a start please perform all the prescribed steps for from http://hp.care/2tC8lRo here to try and resolve the issue. Although the document is different the troubleshooting steps involved are relevant for the current issue.
  • I am sure you’ve already checked this document out for the same error: http://hp.care/2tCEGHD
  • Then check if the printer copies fine by making a couple of copies only. If it copies fine, it should print correctly also.

If the issue continues, please contact Hp phone support tog et the cartridges replaced.

 

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: http://hp.care/2r9wSvP

  • (1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.
  • (2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.
  • (3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.
  • (4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty

 

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue. The trick is to remain patient, Going by your technical expertise and competence I am sure you will be able to perform these steps without breaking a sweat. 🙂

Thanks for trying David.  In the end, the solution was simple... No real surprise!

One of the color cartridges needed to be replaced.  Not sure why I didn't get a simple message about low ink, but I guess it wasn't my day for things to go as expected.
