Hi, can you give me any advice on what it seemed to have been. I purchased an HP ScanJet Pro 4500 about a year and half ago and yesterday it wored find and today I am getting the same black thick line. Do you know what it could be from?

The black vertical thick line is a defective scanning unit ( CIS) and there is nothing much you can do, I have seen this several times, CIS needs to be replaced.
Not sure if they are still available for a replacement.

It seems to be a bulb in the scanner that goes out causing the black line. If your scanner is still under warranty, then HP will replace for free, but if the warranty has expired they won't do a thing for you.
