HP OfficeJetPro 6960 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows Vista

When tried installing from 123.hp.com/setup it said operating system wasn't supported (despite product box saying Vista 32 bit is supported) so I tried from supplied CD-ROMs. Installation seemed to go ahead fine, with slight glitch when it couldn't connect to router. Sorted that by using Wifi connection wizard on printer and have the solid WiFi symbol on printer. When tried to print document, the printer appears in the list of printers as default printer, but on hitting Print nothing comes out of printer. Looking at printer queue the job is pending for a minute then disappears. I wondered if the driver install had worked. So I tried to install again this time from website by following options to install basic Vista driver which appeared in list. After downloading setup file and running it the full installation did not go through all the stages of the first installation, a message appeared that said the drivers were installed. However, when I tried to print the same document again, exactly the same thing happened (nothing comes out of printer, print job pending then disappears). I tried to restart the Printer spooler (services.msc) which I did (I know the job wasn't stuck but just thought I would try it). Tried to print document again but again it failed in exactly the same way.

If anyone can help I would be so grateful.

Thank you

@Limonium,

Thanks for stopping by the HP community. A very good day to you.  I reviewed the post regarding assistance with not being able to print. I will gladly assist you here. Superb description and stupendous diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. 🙂

For better clarity and to assist you better I would require more information regarding this:

  • Did you make copies directly from the printer and check if it copies correctly to isolate that it is not hardware related.
  • Did this happen after a recent software or Windows update?
  • Was there a power outage or surge before this happened?
  • Did you replace ink cartridges and check again?

For now, try these steps:

  • Please make 2 copies directly from the printer without any communication from the computer to eliminate hardware issues with the printer.

If it copies correctly then follow these steps:

  • Please  perform a hard reset on the printer from this link: http://hp.care/2kcz5os (Step 1: Reset the printer)

Then uninstall and reinstall the printer software at the root level if the OS is Windows.

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, in control panel and select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest printer driver from http://hp.care/2tMlcR1 and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Please download and install the Basic drivers for Vista from the support site and it should get fixed.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix the issue.

If this does not do the trick, please download the Windows Built-in drivers by following instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2o3acvH

This will resolve the issue for you.

Also, please update the printer firmware also by following instructions from this link: http://hp.care/2rHKwDD

and update the firmware from the same link mentioned above to download the HP printer drivers.

This will do the trick for you.

Finally, as a last resort, Uninstall the drivers. create a new user account as an administrator and login to the new user account and install the drivers. This should work for you.

Please perform all these steps patiently as it is critical to resolving the issue.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes. To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Cheers!
