I am able to print photos and documents in any size no problem but when I try to print a test page from the app or print sheets from my silhouette app (think like a cricit) it will feed the paper in then freeze up and just shoot it out. I keep getting e1 e1 error when trying to print a test page no matter what size paper I put in. I have reset everything to factor settings, uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled, done everything from every video I have seen online and nothing has helped.
It all started with a paperjam that was so bad we had to take the top of the printer off to get it out and now I am having all of these problems. I have replaced print heads and that didn't help at all. So long as I select the document directly from my computer I can print it but nothing from any app and no test print page will work. I don't even know what to do at this point. PLEASE HELP! My printer is my only form of income...

@NolanOhana, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating this must be, especially when your printer is essential for your work. Based on your description and the E1 error on the HP Smart Tank 5101, here's a step-by-step guide to help resolve the issue:
The E1 error typically indicates a paper size mismatch or paper feed issue. Since you mentioned the issue started after a severe paper jam and now affects test pages and app-based prints, it's likely related to internal sensor misalignment or firmware confusion.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Check Paper Settings in Printer and App
- Ensure the paper size set in the HP Smart app matches the actual paper loaded.
- On Windows:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click your printer > Printing Preferences.
- Set the correct paper size (e.g., A4 or Letter) and paper type.
Reset the Printer Again (Hard Reset)
- Turn on the printer.
- Disconnect the power cable from the printer and wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Clean and Recalibrate the Printer
- Use the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app to:
- Clean printheads
- Align printheads
Update Firmware
- Outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with apps.
- Use the HP Smart app or visit: Official HP® Support
Check Internal Hardware (Post-Jam Damage)
Since you had to disassemble the printer, it’s possible a sensor or cable was misaligned:
- Inspect the paper feed rollers and sensors for any debris or misalignment.
- If you're unsure, it may be best to contact HP support for a hardware diagnostic.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
