@MARIEVHICK, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The E3 error on your HP Smart Tank 500 All-in-One typically indicates a carriage jam, this means the ink cartridge carriage is stuck or obstructed.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue:
Check for Obstructions in the Carriage Path
- Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
- Open the cartridge access door.
- Gently move the carriage side to side. If it’s stuck, do not force it.
- Look for and remove any:
- Crumpled paper
- Dislodged labels
- Foreign objects
- Important: Do not tilt the printer, this can cause ink spillage.
Check the Carriage Latch
- If your printer has a carriage latch, ensure it is securely locked.
- Do not press down on the latch if it’s already secured, this can damage the printer.
Reset the Printer
- Disconnect the power cord from both the printer and the wall.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
- Turn the printer back on.
Try a Test Print
- Once the printer powers on, try printing a test page to see if the error is resolved.
