HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One

HP Smart tank 7301. E4 error message. There are no paper jams, I have cleaned the rollers, reset the printer, followed all the online yoiutube videos. Anyone else had this problem or knows how to clear the error message? TIA

Hi @TrexP,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The E4 error on your HP Smart Tank 7301 printer usually indicates a paper feed issue, often related to a paper jam or misfeed, even if no visible jam is present. Since you've already cleaned the rollers and reset the printer, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps that might help.

Check the Paper Path Again:

  • Even if there doesn't seem to be a jam, carefully inspect all areas of the paper path, including the input tray, output tray, and any other compartments that could be housing a small piece of paper or debris.
  • Ensure no small bits of paper are stuck in the feed area, which could trigger the error.

Verify Paper Type and Quality:

  • Ensure you're using the correct type and weight of paper for your printer. Paper that is too thick, too thin, or of poor quality can sometimes cause feeding issues.
  • Also, check that the paper is aligned properly in the tray and isn't overfilled.

Reset the Printer Again (Power Cycle):

  • Unplug the printer from the wall and wait for at least 60 seconds before plugging it back in. This can help reset internal mechanisms that might not have been cleared with the basic reset.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Sometimes, errors like these can be linked to a firmware issue. Check if there is any available firmware update for your printer on the HP support website or via the HP Smart app.

Perform a Printer Diagnostic:

  • Run a diagnostic test through the HP Smart app or from the printer’s control panel to check for any other hidden issues that might not be immediately obvious.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
