I have reset the printer many times, left it unplugged overnight and have checked for any jams etc and there are none. I can't get this error to go away and I require the printer for Uni.
Can anyone help at all on how to get this out of the error state. Driving me nuts over here.

Hi @FionaAust81,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are getting the E6 error on the HP ENVY 6420e indicates a carriage jam or a similar issue. Since you've already tried resetting and unplugging the printer, as well as checking for jams, here are a few additional steps you can try:
Check the Carriage Path:
- Turn off the printer and open the front cover.
- Gently move the carriage (the part that holds the ink cartridges) left and right to check if it's stuck.
- Make sure there are no obstructions or small bits of paper blocking the carriage path.
Clean the Encoder Strip:
- The encoder strip is a clear strip running across the printer behind the carriage.
- Carefully clean it with a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Be gentle to avoid damaging the strip.
Inspect the Rollers:
- Check the paper rollers for any stuck paper bits or debris.
- Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.
Update Firmware:- Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can do this by visiting the HP support website and downloading the latest firmware update for your model.
Reset the Printer:
- Disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer while it’s on.
- Wait for at least 60 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridges:
- Turn on the printer and open the ink cartridge access door.
- Remove and reinstall the ink cartridges to ensure they are properly seated.
Check for Software Issues:
- Ensure your printer drivers are up to date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP support website.
