Have tried installing/reinstalling and then again installing/reinstalling the full software, shutdown, printer off, router off, and what not. Text and docs print fine from main tray.
Photos is another story altogether. Simply will not print any type of photo paper, neither from the main tray with 8 1/2x11 glossy photo paper nor from the 4x6 photo tray. Sound like it is trying to start by feeding the paper, then it goes silent for a while and lo and behold, the screen on the printer says canceling then it out feeds the paper (blank of course).
I first tried this with a printer I got last week, failed, packed it up and back it went to Costco. Read someplace, don't remember where, to try with another printer (thinking maybe it was a lemon). So went and got printer 2. Again same old errors but this time did not install/reinstall multiple times.
Tried this on my desktop (win10 Pro, AMD A10-7860K, 32GB ram) and wifes laptop (HP DV7 3065dx, 8GB ram). Both have same Photo "canceling print" error.
Anyone out there have any suggestions on how to overcome this problem before I return print 2?
Thanks ahead of time.

Sounds like trouble. Smiling. Good job on the persistence factor!
Printer should print photos. Printer is made to print photos.

Random Thoughts on the Subject of a Stubborn Printer
- Printers come with lots of packing material. Every cranny is stuffed with tiny pieces of blue tape and little cardboard bits. Great for protecting the printer during shipment and bouncing around the delivery truck. A royal pain to unpack and set up. Smiling. Check again for scraps of missed blue bits and cardboard. For example, I found cardboard stuffed in the back of the tray area in an Officejet Pro 8740. Crafty packing people.
- If you are using HP "Premium" photo paper, opt instead for the HP Advanced Photo paper. Lots of advantages and just any printer will print with it. HP printers like HP Advanced Photo paper. HP Advanced Photo Paper
- There are reasons why some printers do NOT like the Premium paper (type of ink) - @Bob_Headrick can explain and perhaps verify whether this printer can use Premium paper. Bob also understands printer mechanics - if there is something hinky going on, Bob can perhaps tell you where to look for "hinkiness".
- If you have not done so, you need to tell the software you are using to submit the job to the printer that you are using Media type photo paper. There may be a selection for the exact kind of paper, but you at least have to tell the printer you are using photo paper.
Media (kind of paper), Source (tray), and Paper Size are all selected in Printing Preferences > shortcut. Depending on the software you are using to submit the print job, the "Preferences" might be called Properties. The point is to drill into the printer software and not depend only on the main print job menu.
If you have not done so, you might like to try using HP Photo Creations. The software is somewhat intuitive and can help you set up your photo (and photo project) prints.
Download, Save, and install:
After the software is installed:
Click Start (windows key) > all apps > scroll the list
Open Category HP
Find the HP Photo Creations application
Right-Click on the application and PIN to Start

Thanks for the input.
The latest thing I tried after failing with photo paper, both letter size and 4x6, was to try to print that same picture onto plain white letter paper, and it too failed. The printer first cancelled the print then ejected the paper with nothing on it. The screen showed the word canceling. Looking in control panel > printers > properties shows the print still there, ready to try again. Only solution to stop that cycle was to just cancel the print from the queue.
Also tried using Word. 1st tried some colored text, then print worked. Then tried with that same doc but with an inserted jpg file (1.38 MB), failed completely. Next that same doc but with a smaller jpg (4.68KB), started to print about a quarter of the image file, then failed. Finally same doc now with jpg (2.13 KB) and it printed.
My docs text is "This is a test. This is a test. This is a test."
Tried same doc with a png file (3.69KB), failed.
Finally tried printing the jpg (2.13 KB) on photo paper 4x6 and it printed the top ~40% of the picture then failed.
Seems like the printer driver has a memory size limitation when it comes to images.
I'm using the printer driver from the Full Webpack v44.3.2218. Is there a newer stand alone printer driver that I could download/install that would solve my problem?

Restart Everything, including the router.
No Joy?
If you have not done so, uninstall the printer software > Restart > Install the printer software > Restart
If you have not done so, consider updating the Firmware.
Hint: For best results, do not ignore the suggested Restart sequences.
Printer Software – Uninstall Existing Software
If the software is already installed and you want (need) to uninstall it:
Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features >
Scroll down, click, and Uninstall the software
After the software is removed, Restart the computer and log in
If printer software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and then shows up again, or is otherwise not “going away” when you tell it to do so, try an Uninstaller program.
Microsoft: Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed
Printer Software – Lurking in the Device Manager
After uninstalling the software and the computer Restart, if the printer is still lurking about in the Device Manager, remove it.
Control Panel > icon view > Device Manager
Expand category Printers
If any printer name or “Unknown Device” is listed,
Right-Click on the printer / device > Uninstall
Expand category Imaging Devices
If any printer name or “Unknown Device” is listed,
Right-Click on the printer / device > Uninstall
Restart the computer and log in
Printer Software - Installation
NOTE
- If using USB, disconnect the USB cable between the printer and the computer before starting the installation.
- Connect the cable when instructed to do so (toward the end of the installation procedure).
Download, save, and install the Full Feature Software for your Operating System version
After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in
