Hi @JosPot,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how concerning it is to see error code 0X00F81D42 TRKERNEL C on your HP Envy 5540, especially when it stops normal operation. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Perform a Power Reset (Basic Restart)

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cable from the back of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds to allow any residual power to drain.
  • Plug the power cable directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Reconnect the cable to the printer and turn it on.
  • Check if the error message still appears.

2. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  • Open the front and back access panels to check for any jammed paper, torn pieces, or debris inside the printer.
  • Remove any stuck paper carefully.
  • Close all panels properly and restart the printer.

3. Update the Printer Firmware

  • If the printer starts normally after the reset, check if a firmware update is available:
    • Go to HP Support → Enter your printer model → Download the latest firmware.
    • Alternatively, update firmware from the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) if accessible.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
