Hi @KurtH2024,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Color LaserJet Pro M254dw is experiencing some serious issues, particularly with the engine failure and firmware update errors. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve these issues.

Power Cycle and Restart

Since you're currently resolving the issue by unplugging the power cable, continue to do so whenever the "Engine Failure" message appears. This can help reset the printer and clear temporary issues.

Check Printer Connections

Ensure that all cables connecting the printer to power and to the computer/network are securely plugged in. Sometimes loose connections can cause communication errors or power issues.

Update Firmware Using USB

If updating firmware through the network or the printer's control panel is failing with a "65 error", try updating the firmware using a USB connection:

  • Download the latest firmware update file from HP's official website.
  • Copy the firmware update file onto a USB flash drive.
  • Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on the printer.
  • Navigate to the printer's control panel menu, usually under Settings or Setup.
  • Locate the option to update firmware from USB. Follow the on-screen instructions to initiate the update.

Perform a Factory Reset

Performing a factory reset can sometimes resolve persistent issues with printers:

  • From the printer's control panel, navigate to the Settings or Setup menu.
  • Look for an option that allows you to reset the printer to factory defaults.
  • Confirm the reset and allow the printer to restart.

Note: Performing a factory reset will erase any customized settings on the printer, so you may need to reconfigure network settings and other preferences afterward.

By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and address the "Engine Failure" and firmware update errors on your HP Color LaserJet Pro M254dw printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
