HP PhotoSmart 7520
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I currently have an HP PhotoSmart 7520 which has been doing a fine job on "normal" printing (8 x 11"), scans and copies.  However, about 50% of my printing is graphics on 6 3/4 size envelopes.  It has been smearing black ink on the left side of the envelopes (I guess where the envelope is pulled into the printer.  The problem is that the envelope is pulled in and up and round rather than straight through.)  Have not been able to fix this, even after using all of the printer Tools.

Before I go out and buy a replacement does anyone know if the following HP printers have capability to print on 6 3/4 envelopes?

- HP OfficeJet Pro 8100

- HP OfficeJet 6978

- HP OfficeJet 8710

And, if so, is the printer resolution quality at least equivalent to the 7520?

Thanks, any help appreciated!

Hello @Redeagle999, Thank you for your reply.

I understand your confusion in going through the specs from the HP shopping website. I see that the 6 3/4 envelope is not mentioned, but please refer to the links I provided to you in the first reply – It explains clearly the paper type supported and it clearly mentions that the Envelope 6 3/4 is supported (6 3/4 envelope - 92 x 165 mm (3.62 x 6.5 inches)). That document is an official HP document for the printer specification and please go by that.

Let me know if you need any further assistance!

Cheers 🙂

Hello @Redeagle999, Greetings!

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP forums. I am happy to help you with your envelope printing issue.

Out of the 3 printers you have listed, both Officejet 6978 & HP Officejet 8710 have the capability to print on 6 3/4  envelopes.

You can refer to http://hp.care/2bJ8xqV to check printer specifications on Officejet 8710 and http://hp.care/2bJ8RWU to check printer specification on Officejet 6978 printer.

Alternatively, you can also check http://hp.care/2bJ8Gej to check about envelope printing.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply regarding alternative printers.

Would replacing the print head help resolve the smearing problems?  Is there a way to clean the print head or other potential causes of the problem?

HP Recommended

Hello @Redeagle999, Thank you for replying 🙂

You can definitely try to clean the print head and check for issue resolution. You can try both automated cleaning as well as manually cleaning the print head by taking it out of the machine.

Please go through the document: http://hp.care/2bJso9G

Follow from step 5 onwards. It has a pictorial guide to clean the print head.

Please try these steps and let me know if it helps.
Cheers 🙂

Just to be certain before I go out and purchase a model Officejet 6978 or 8710, there is a question that should be resolved.

1. Your reply indicates that the 6978 would be able to handle Envelopes No. 6 3/4.  However when I read the Spec. sheet on this web page  http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-officejet-pro-6978-all-in-one-printer  it does not show that particular media type under "Media Sizes supported", quoted below:

Media sizes supported

A4, A5, A6, B5(JIS), 6 x 8 in, Executive, Index card 3.5 x 5 in, Index card 4 x 6 in, Index card 5 x 8 in, Index card A4, Index card Letter, 3.5 x 5 in, 4 x 6 in, 5 x 7 in, 13 x 18 cm, 8 x 10 in, 10 x 15 cm, L, Photo 2L, 8.5 x 13 in, Legal, Letter, Statement, Envelope #10, Envelope C5, Envelope C6, Envelope DL; Envelope Monarch, Card Envelope 4.4 x 6 in

Is this just an oversight or incorrect or incomplete?

2.  A similar situation also seems to pertain to the 8710, web page http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer

Media sizes supported

A4; A5; A6; B5 (JIS); Envelope (DL, C5, C6, Chou #3, Chou #4); Card (Hagaki, O**bleep**u Hagaki)

Thanks.  I bought the 6978.  Hope it will at least equal the Photosmart 7520.

This morning I installed the HP Officejet Pro 6978.  All went well, including the wireless connection function.

However, and a big however here, I tried to print 6 3/4 envelopes.  This size is NOT on the list.  Everything but.  What am I missing?  This is significant because this functionality is the primary reason I bought this particular brand/machine.  I don't want to have to return the printer!

OK.  After tinkering around I finally got to the point where it now shows the 6 3/4 envelope.  I've printed a few envelopes and the only remaining issue that I need to solve is the fact that the print size on the envelope is smaller than the exact same settings with my 7520.

Hi,

I have a problem with the functionality of printing on 6 /3/4 envelopes.  The left side of the envelope is cut off when printing from a pdf file.  I did not have this problem with the 7520.  I bought this printer with the assurances that this would work for me and right now it does not.

Is there a way to attach a document so as to show you what I am dealing with here?  (The Insert/Edit File Image does not accept a PDF file.)
