My printer says the black cartridge must be replaced after I installed a new HP black cartridge. I was able to print a test alignment page, but when I tried to scan it, I got the above message. Before I did that, the printer said I did not have the correct cartridges installed. I do. I followed troubleshooting advice and cleaned the printer heads. I have unplugged the printer as instructed a number of times. No luck.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
If you insert your old black ink, does the message go away?
Also, follow the steps from here: https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-envy-4500-e-all-in-one-printer-series/5304875/model/5304876/...
Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for your suggestions. I put in a new black cartridge and after a few tries, it let me print an alignment page. The alignment failed, but somehow the printer is now working. I'm somewhat afraid of turning it off because then I have to go through the whole alignment thing again only to have it fail. Nonetheless, my printer is working again and I am thankful for that. Fingers crossed.
