Envy 4523
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an Envy 4523 printer, previously working fine, i tried to print a photo, selected colour, it kept defaulting to monochrome. i updated the firmware of the printer, now it will not not only not print in colour, but the duplex printing has stopped. i have uninstalled and reinstalled the software, remove the device the device from windows. On reinstalling the software says it installs, but there are no launchable apps.I have basic printing capability, but still cannot print in colour or have automatic duplex printing, even though it is set to do so. on the advise of the community manager i installed print and scan doctor, i ran that and it stated i have registry issues

No software will install - even through it says it does

@VonDoom
Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a software or Windows update?
  • Did you try to make copies in color directly from the printer and check if it copies correctly in color?
  • Did you replace ink cartridges and check if the issue gets resolved?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Please make 2 copies in color directly from the printer without any communication from the computer.

If it copies fine then uninstall the printer drivers by following these steps:

  • Uninstall the printer from "programs and features" which can be accessed by doing a right-click on the Windows button (Please have the printer Off and disconnected during uninstallation.)
  • Check in device manager, if the printer is listed there, please delete it. (Right click on the Windows button to access device manager)
  • Go to devices and printers, select any printer listed there and you will get some options on the top.
  • Click on print server properties.
  • You will get a popup, click on the drivers tab and delete all the HP printer drivers listed there if any.
  • Delete all the instances of your printer listed in devices and printers.
  • Restart the PC.
  • Once the PC is on the desktop, press Win + R, it would bring a Run dialog box,
  • Type %temp% in the run box and click Ok or hit the Enter button.
  • It would bring up the temporary files folder. Delete the files in the folder (You might not be able to delete all the files).
  • If possible, delete the printer from the registries using Regedit or using any other 3rd party application.
  • Ignore the Regedit option if it cannot be done.
  • Restart the PC again.

Then download the latest full feature driver from http://hp.care/2uxq0WV and install it on the computer after selecting the correct operating system.

Connect the printer to your computer only when the setup prompts for the printer.

This should fix the issue.

  • For printing double sided or duplex printing follow the steps from this link: http://hp.care/2uxlLe0  for two sided printing in Windows.
  • This should do the trick for you.
  • If it fails to copy in color, then please follow all the steps from this link: http://hp.care/2uxlIyQ for color or black not printing. This should resolve it for you as long as there is no hardware issue.
  • If there is a hardware issue please contact. I would request you to contact our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to sort this out. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:  www.hp.com/contacthp/

Hi Echo

I completed all the steps you suggested

and installed the HP Smart recommended set up /driver package

I can now print in colour - so thank you for that

However, I still cannot print automatically on both sides

I select the option in printer properties (automatic duplex unit) which by default is not installed and update this to installed and apply.

Once i try to print a multi page document and select duplex printing, it will only do manual 2 sided - where i need to flip over the page and reinsert into the printer

On checking the printer properties after this, the duplex print unit is then not installed

Running window 10 64 bit 1909

Can you assist?
