HP envy 5055
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

Just bought a factory refurbished Envy 5055  'whitebox' printer with no documentation, setup disk or ink. It came with setup ink cartridges (2), 1 page setup instruction (plug in, power on, go to hp.123.com)  and when I install cartridges, the printer says "Do not use setup cartridges". Will the printer work when I install original 65 ink cartridges? Why would a printer not come with useable ink? in the box contents, it states "...M2U85A HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer; HP 65 Setup Black Instant Ink Ready Cartridge (up to 120 pages); HP 65 Setup Tri-color Instant Ink Ready Cartridge (up to 100 pages) Also the hp.123.com website installation suite (150+MB) fails in win7 32b. "application has encountered a problem". windows detects and sees printer as default , but no test page can be printed.

Update: The black setup cartridge is either defective or cannot be used at all in the setup process of this remanufactured printer. Using only the color cartridge, the printer advises me there was only one cartridge in and proceeded to walk me through the rest of the installation with no further problems. I installed the black cartridge in again and it halted on the "Do not use setup cartridge" so the black setup cartridge was the problem. 07/2019 Firmware update did not solve issue as I was finally able to update the firmware by using the printer update via wifi on my network. The USB firmware update failed. Maybe bad USB cable? Worked fine on another printer.

Hey there! @68pishta,

Have you tried checking with a different ink cartridge?

Does the issue persist when you put the old ink cartridge back to your printer?

SETUP ink cartridges are used only to set up a new HP printer or printhead and supply ink for the first series of your print jobs. They are specially designed to initialize a printer and calibrate ink levels. Unlike replacement ink cartridges, SETUP ink cartridges cannot be purchased from retailers and are available only in the box with a new printer or with some replacement printhead kits. When a SETUP ink cartridge is depleted, purchase and use a normal ink cartridge that matches your printer model to continue printing.

Can I install new, unused SETUP ink cartridges after my printer has initialized?

No. If you install new, unused SETUP ink cartridges after your printer has been initialized, an error displays to remove the SETUP ink cartridges. After your printer has initialized, you can use the original SETUP ink cartridges until they are depleted and then replace them with normal ink cartridges for your printer. You can purchase replacement ink cartridges from HP SureSupply or other retailers.

Please try few steps recommended below.

Resetting the printer can resolve an ink cartridge error.
Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 60 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
   NOTE:
HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.
Try to print.

Tried all that. The fact that HP provided ink that doesnt work in the printer that it was supplied with is crazy. And the printer software that is linked crashes on win7 32b during installation, 3 times ? I threw my hands up and put it back in the box. My mom bought the same printer new and it worked and printed with the setup cartridges. The fact that this refurbished by HP printer even came with 'setup ink' is ridiculous. It should have come with standard ink if it was already past the setup ink stage.
