HP Envy 5530
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Bought an HP Envy 5530 brand new back in 2015 and it sat untouched in the box until earlier this year. Following a successful setup (with the original supplied cartridges) it worked perfectly. Now, after being idle for two or three months it won't print in black at all. Color printing is fine on test pages. Ink levels show better than half-full for both cartridges. No change after several (too many?) cartridge cleaning cycles.....nothing prints in black and no error messages. I figured the age of the original cartridges might be the culprit but I'm not sure since they worked OK on initial setup. Any thoughts on whether a new black cartridge is indicated here or is there something else I could/should try first?

I have the same problem on my Officejet 6970. It happened right after the printer performed a driver update. I've tried eveything HP suggests, but could only get round it by switching to Glossy paper settings in the printer driver settings. At least this proves that the ink and the printheads are fine. It's HP's printer drivers that could be the problem.

@Sparkag, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Try making a Standalone Black photocopy and check if that works. If it works, proceed to the next step.

Clean uninstallation of Pre-installed HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Click here to download the HP Full-featured driver.

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation and follow the on-screen instructions.

Try to Print.

Hello Kumar,

I tried standalone black photocopying and it does not work.

This suggests that the problem is with the printer firmware.

However printing from a PC with the paper setting set to glossy paper works.

This problem started after the printer updated its firmware

How can I roll back the printer firmware?

Thanks

@Sparkag

Unfortunately, there is no option to rollback to the previous version of printer firmware. Have you tried re-installing the HP drivers as suggested in my previous post and try to print?

Keep me posted for further assistance.

Krazy Toad:

Thanks for the reply. I tried what you suggested re "Solution Four" at the link you provided (printhead cleaning) and see no change after several cycles. However, I also tried "Solution One" at that link (I tried making a copy of a black-print-only document without the black ink cartridge installed) and it worked perfectly. The suggestion provided is to let the cartridge sit overnight with the nozzles facing up which I will now try. Anything else you might suggest? Appreciate the input.

Hi Kumar,

Eventhough the standalone black photocopy didn't work I still went through the compete uninstall, reboot and install procedure as you requested on my Windows PC (see few responses up in trail). This procedure didn't work.

HP needs to make available the previous firmware otherwise this printer is no longer fit for purpose.

When will you make this available.

Thank you

I'm amazed!  I just tried exactly what you did (printing after selecting "Other glossy paper" in the printer properties and it worked perfectly. Didn't expect that. It still won't print if I select "Plain paper". So have you tried installing those new drivers as was suggested and if so what was the result?

Hi Rick2614,

I went through the entire HP reinstallation procedure and still have the same problem as before. It didn't make any difference 😞
