Hi

My printer will not print colour, it will scan and print in colour and print in colour on test sheets but nothing from word or adobe programs I use sent from my laptop.

I have tried uninstalling and installing the printer,

a new ink cartridge,

cleaning the cartridges.

I have been in to the depths of advanced preferences on my printer set up in devices and printers but no option to check or uncheck colour/greyscale.

The printer displays a question mark but I can not find anything relevant when I press it.

Please could anyone help. Thank you

Going through your post, I see that you are facing issues while printing in colour. I’d suggest you perform a clean install to try and fix this issue. Here are the steps:

  • First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (There is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to the Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Now click   http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL61235/mp-147821-1/EN5540_Full_WebPack_1119.exe to install the software.
  • Connect the USB cable if prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

I was pleased that my printer printed in colour once I had reinstalled like you suggested. But I switched it off and a few days later I wanted to print again and it has gone back to black and white again. I can't keep reinstalling everytime I switch the printer off. Please help.

I had the same issue with the HP Envy 5540 where after reinstalling the latest software/drivers it would convert all printing to grayscale. I followed the instructions above, but instead of installing the latest version, I reinstalled from the CD. So far it seems to be working normally. I will watch for a later update.
