@elmcq, take a look at this document.
You can print to any size paper within the minimum and maximum printing dimensions your printer.

Hi, I recently purchased an Envy 5540. I use Windows 10.
I looked at the linked document. Just FYI...You won't get printer server properties if you just search "printer" and go to Printers and Scanners. You have to go to Control Panel to get to Devices & Printers, and then printer server properties will show at the top.
Once there, I followed the instructions to create a new form. I called it Half Size, since I'm trying to print on 5.5x8.5" paper. The form was successfully created, but it won't show up in the drop down menu in the Advanced Paper/Layout tab.
Is there something further I need to do?

I understand where you are coming from. HP do NOT make it easy sort the problem.
You first go into Devices & Printers and jsut single click on your Printer.
At the top of the page click on Printer Server Properties.
From the Drop Down Menu tick the Create a New Form Box.
Create your new page and save.
When you are ready to print something on the newly created paper size, go to Perferences when the printer page opens and your new page sizes should be at the bottom of the list available.
Good luck.

As stated, I successfully created a form with the dimensions I want (5.5x8.5"). However, it does not show up in the drop down list in Print -> Properties -> Paper/Quality tab -> Advanced button -> Paper/Output paper size.
Is there something else I am missing?
Please see the screenshots below.

I've looked and looked, and there is no "left hand list at the bottom" with everyday printing, photo printing etc. How do I get to that menu? In which program or settings?
I've looked at printing a Word document, and the Half Size option is there. However I am printing a PDF from Adobe Reader, and the menu options are completely different.
Technically I am able to print on the half size paper if I choose A5, or do multiple sheets on a letter size, but both options shrink the document and the margins are too large.
