Hello jrbgd,
Are the replacement cartridges original HP 62 cartridges. If not, it may be the problem. Have you tried temporarily reinserting the old ones to see what happens.
It would be helpful to recount in a reply on this thread with exactly what steps you tried with no results.
You say you tried everything; and possibly this is the website (below) you describe. I would do things 2 or 3 times such as removing/reinserting. Run the Clean Ink Cartridges from the front display panel (2 or 3 times). Be careful in manual cleaning, do not touch the nozzles themselves and do not use alcohol.
In this link, please do Step 6 right now. (Hard Reset of the printer) Any results?

At the end it has the contacts, but out of warranty, they will charge for telephone time. What the process is - you get on the web site and establish a case number and they should give you a telephone call. Wait until we resolve all possible corrective actions, there's more to try. Inquire about it. A solution is out here on the forums.
(One wonders if HP has embedded in the software of a percentage of devices that they fail after the warranty to sell more, as they obviously do to counter off-brand ink.)
I am not an HP employee, just searching for answers for queries. Good luck.

You say you tried everything; and possibly this is the website (below) you describe. I would do things 2 or 3 times such as removing/reinserting. I have removed and reinserted the catriges (the new cartriges) at least 10 times.
Run the Clean Ink Cartridges from the front display panel (2 or 3 times). It will not go passed "install cartiges"
Be careful in manual cleaning, do not touch the nozzles themselves and do not use alcohol. I cleaned both the cartiges and cartridge mount with a swab and distilled water.
In this link, please do Step 6 right now. (Hard Reset of the printer) I thought I did this.
1. Powered down, unplugged for 15 secs, plug back in.
2. Took out cartriges, unplugged, waited, powered on, installed color cartridge. If this does not work replace the black only. Nothing.
(One wonders if HP has embedded in the software of a percentage of devices that they fail after the warranty to sell more, as they obviously do to counter off-brand ink.)
I must buy a more expensive printer next time. These all in one (less than 100 buck) way to go is a moneysuck!!!!!!

Hello again jrbgd,
I have been remiss in not reviewing my threads, HP had been sending me email when a person responds, but I have not been able to get that working. Anyhow, assume you still are there? I agree about HP sabotaging the printer software.
It is possibly that the replacement cartridges are defective.
You said "This is only the first replacement cartiges used." Have you really just now used up the original "Starter" cartridges That's a lot of time for the printer sitting idle for long periods. The cartridges need to be used periodically (monthly at least) to prevent drying out, clogging.
What we have not tried is uninstalling and reinstalling the printer's hardware. Has the Windows 7 been updating recently.
1) The first step is the Hard Reset. Please bear with it and do it again.
You say you powered down and then unplugged. The procedure is pretty specific to do: 1) Turn the power ON, and then 2) unplug (while the power is on), and then 3) plug back in (wait 15 sec.) Please follow carefully, thus:
-Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
-Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
-With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
-Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
-Wait at least 60 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet. Turn on if needed. Any results?
2) If no improvement lets do a complete uninstall by using this REVO uninstaller (free) program (next link). In the window that opens, left click once to highlight any relating to the 5540 printer. Then at the top of the page click uninstall. https://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html
3) Install the full feature software. Click Software & Drivers > Go > download. In the blue line, does Windows 7 show (and if not 64 bit, change it). You want only the Full Feature Software. Do not install any of the other items, the software includes the drivers.
Let my know if any success (or not) and good luck.

It is possibly that the replacement cartridges are defective. ●●●Perhaps, but at 50 bucks per setnof cartriges, when the pringer was only 80 to begin with...?
You said "This is only the first replacement cartiges used." Have you really just now used up the original "Starter" cartridges That's a lot of time for the printer sitting idle for long periods. The cartridges need to be used periodically (monthly at least) to prevent drying out, clogging. ●●● I don't print at home much and life has kept my potential printing intentions at bay.
What we have not tried is uninstalling and reinstalling the printer's hardware. Has the Windows 7 been updating recently. ●●●Latest service pack successfully installed. Remember that the printer recognizing the cartiges is the issue, NOT the laptop seeing the printer. During the HP diagnostics, the printer was realized, but stopped the process with an error. ( I don't remember what it was)

Let my know if any success (or not) and good luck●●● I appreciate your time on this, but at the end of the day, something within the load circuit that inspects the installed (or lack there of) cartridge, is bad. I have raised the white flag with a solemn heart. I have lost the battle, but the war continues.

Hello again jrgbd,
Your thread is one of the earliest, of which I am monitoring. Sorry for the delays.
This link will provide list of which printers can use the most recent HP 62 cartridges you purchased.
https://support.hp.com/my-en/document/c01766411 entitled Which Cartridges Work with My HP Printer? ( Which means which printers to buy for your ink cartridges.)
My 11/23 reply has the process to reinstall the software. A few more minutes to try it (doing the hard reset), because your Windows 7 updates (as has frequently been the problem with Windows 10) would find whether it could have caused a problem with the printer's software not being uptodate. If you see any error messages, it's helpful to have made a note and include that info. Good luck. Bye.
