HP ENVY Pro 6420 All-in-One Printer
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

My Envy 6420 did not start up correctly today.

First of all I got an E9 code.

I followed a tutorial that seemed to be a reset (press power & wifi buttons for 5 seconds). This didn't change anything.

I switched off the printer at the mains, then back on after a few seconds.

Now, there is just a purple light that comes on in the middle, then splits off to each side.

Printer will not work, just shows Offline in HP Smart app.

Any ideas how to get it working, please?

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be happy to help.

Let's try to reset the Printer here:

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.

Try a firmware update: https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_1776648-1643972-16

Let me know if this helps.

Dear Betty,

Thank you for your response.

I had to keep trying different things on the day, including powering off and on again. This didn't work.

I can't remember what eventually worked, but eventually, I got the printer to connect to the internet.

Regards.......
