Envy Pro 6400 series. I'm getting a yellow light on the side of printer and "tray is open" msg in HP Smart.

I cleared a paper jam previously and see no remaining paper in the printer.

I have continually opened the paper tray and adjusted the paper that I have loaded.

@kevinkx, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

The yellow light on the side of your HP Envy Pro 6400 and the “Tray is open” message in HP Smart typically indicates a paper tray alignment or sensor issue, especially after clearing a paper jam. Here are steps to resolve it:

Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check Paper Tray Alignment

  • Remove the paper tray completely.
  • Inspect for any broken tabs, misaligned guides, or debris.
  • Reload paper:
    • Use clean, flat paper.
    • Adjust the paper width guides snugly against the paper.
    • Reinsert the tray firmly until it clicks into place.

Inspect Tray Sensor Area

  • Open the cartridge access door and look inside for any dislodged parts or paper fragments.
  • Gently tilt the printer and inspect underneath for any stuck paper or obstructions near the tray sensor.

Update or Reinstall HP Smart

  • Ensure you’re using the latest version of HP Smart.
  • Remove and re-add the printer in the app after resetting.

Run HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

Factory Reset (if issue persists)

  • Restore factory defaults via the printer control panel or HP Smart app.
  • Re-add the printer after reset.
