My Envy 5540 (or 5543?) printer has worked fine for years with my PC, iPhone and iPad, but in the last couple of days it has been throwing up a 0XB80003E4 error.
I have installed brand new genuine hp cartridges (after previously using some substitute ones), but that didn’t help. I tried a solution posted on this site, where I pulled out the power cord from the wall, removed and reinserted cartridges etc, but that didn’t work — although I was able to print a perfect test page before the error came up again.
I’d be grateful for any advice on this problem, thanks.

Hi @GerryF1,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd like to help!
I understand you are receiving a "0XB80003E4" error on the printer screen.
We can perform a factory defaults on the printer to resolve the issue
The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may corrupt the device.
I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Support Community profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

Thanks for your reply, Jay. Unfortunately I'm making little headway.
Here's what happened:
When I turned on the printer I got a message to take out and reinstall the ink cartridges (which are new, genuine HP). I've done this multiple times, but still end up with the 0XB80003E4 error (though sometimes I can manage to print a perfect test page before the error appears).
So I didn't reinstall the cartridges again, but just tapped OK, which brought up the little initial printer screen, which has the heading HP ENVY with options to Copy, Scan, etc, as in the attached image. There is no Home (TL) icon showing, so I tap the "?" (help) icon. That takes me to a help screen, as in the other attached image, that does have Home (TL) and Return (BL) icon. So, following your instructions, I tap TL, but that takes me immediately back to the first screen, which has no TL or BL, just the ? icon - so I can't successively tap TL, BL.
So I haven't been able to get to the Reset procedure. Any idea what's going wrong for me?
Thanks
Gerry

Finally got to the hidden menu and did the partial reset. I was then able to select the Language, US version, and load paper. The Error 0XB80003E4 has stopped coming up, but it keeps telling me there's a ink cartridge problem, and to remove and reinstall the cartridge, which is a brand new genuine hp one. This same problem was occurring with the previous cartridge before I bought the new one. So I can't get past Ink Cartridge Problem screen because it keeps coming up.

Try the steps in the document to resolve the cartridge error - Ink cartridge errors
Try the single cartridge mode
The printer you own can work in single-cartridge mode, wherein the printer will be able to print with one cartridge in the printer. Which will help us identify if its a cartridge issue or a printhead issue
To try single-cartridge mode follow the below steps:
- remove the black ink from the printer, leave the color in and try printing
- then remove the color ink and, insert the black in and try printing
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Well, I was able to print pages in single cartridge mode for both black and colour. Then when I installed both cartridges it still worked fine, no error messages at all. I'll go ahead now and re-set up the networking etc and see whether it's still ok. Will then give a report on how it went.
Thanks for your patient assistance Jay
