I kept getting an error code 0x6100004a with my printer and I tried everything; clearing paper jams (which there were none), powering off, etc. No luck whatsoever.
So I decided to go through the entire printer again. I found the smallest piece of paper (1/4" x 1/4" sitting on one of the rails in the back where there paper would be fed into. Didn't seem like it would bother anything really. To get to this rail, you lift the cartridge access door and it is silver, located in the very back.
I removed this tiny piece and voila, back to normal. Hope this helps somebody in the future.

Hi @JayBone34,
Thank you for your response,
The error code 0x6100004a on HP printers usually indicates a hardware issue. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this problem.
- Reset the printer: Turn off the printer, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer, and wait at least 60 seconds. Then reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.
- Check for any obstructions: Even if you didn't find any paper jams initially, carefully check the printer for any small pieces of paper or debris that might be causing the issue. Use a flashlight if necessary.
- Inspect the carriage path: Open the printer cover and check the carriage path (the area where the cartridges move) for any obstructions or foreign objects. Make sure the carriage can move freely from one side to the other.
- Update printer firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer's firmware can resolve various errors. Check the HP website for any available firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 model and follow the instructions to install them.
- Clean the encoder strip: The encoder strip is a clear plastic strip located behind the carriage that helps the printer determine its position. Use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water to gently clean the encoder strip. Be careful not to damage or dislodge the strip.
- Check the ink cartridges: Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and seated correctly. If any cartridges are low or empty, replace them with genuine HP cartridges.
- Perform a hard reset: Sometimes, performing a hard reset can resolve various issues. To do this, unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer while it is still turned on. Wait for at least 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back in. Turn on the printer and check if the error persists.
By following these steps, you should hopefully be able to troubleshoot and resolve the error code 0x6100004a on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6968 printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
