HP ENVY 5020 All-in-One Printer

I was unable to connect to my printer and noticed that the IP address 169.254.167.26 was different from the usual 192.168.0.xxx range.  I looked up and finally found that the printer couldn't locate the default gateway.

1)  I thought it was something to do with my changing my router to using WPA3 so I switched it back to WPA2 (although my laptop shows it's using WPA3).  It didn't solve the printer connectivity problem but I was able  now to connect it to my HP Smart.

2)  I thought of using a USB connection but couldn't locate my USB printer cable.

3)  I then decided to force the IP address and changed it to 192.168.0.2 which other devices were not using.  That didn't work although the IP address was now showing the 192.168 range.

4)  I checked the wireless settings and saw both default gateway and DNS were blank.  I used the control panel on the printer to try to change both to 192.168. as I couldn't change them using HP Smart.  But somehow they could not change.

5)  I tried to manually change it 3 or 4 times and not sure what I did but suddenly it displayed the error code 0xB82BA0EC.  I saw somewhere that this likely indicated a problem with the network but am not sure how to resolve it.

I plugged back the power cord after a while and the error has disappeared but my default gateway problem isn't resolved.

Update:  I managed to get the manual IP address, sub-net and default gateway to stick in my network config, BUT now the IP address won't even show any IP - says "Not Connected".

As I recently changed my cartridges to subscribe to the Instant Ink program, my printer is basically useless (unless I by some new cartridges from retail)

I wonder if the wifi chip has died?

@BGToh, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Printer Connectivity Issues with HP Envy 5020!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The IP address 169.254.x.x assigned to your HP Envy 5020 indicates that the printer is not properly connecting to your network. This address is part of the Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA) range, which usually occurs when a device is unable to obtain a valid IP address from the router.

Here are steps to resolve this issue:

Verify Network Settings:

  • Ensure your router is set to broadcast both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks if applicable, as many printers connect only to 2.4 GHz networks.
  • Check if your printer is trying to connect to the correct network (SSID).

Router Security Settings:

  • Set your router’s wireless security to WPA or WPA2, as some printers may have issues with WPA3.
  • Ensure that SSID broadcast is enabled on your router.

Reset Network Settings on Printer:

  • On the printer touchscreen, go to Network Setup or Wireless Settings.
  • Select Restore Network Settings to reset network settings to default.

IP Address Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Reset your router by turning it off and back on, then wait for it to fully reboot.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Reconnect the printer to the network via the control panel following the setup instructions.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
