Hi all, our office printer suddenly stopped working and now gives the error 49.38.07, indicating firmware failure. I downloaded the latest firmware and tried to reboot pressing different key combinations to enter the administrator interface, but with no success. It ignores any key combination, goes through all initialization steps, and keeps throwing the error before getting to the user interface.

Any advice?

First step is to isolate whether this is a hardware issue or a printer driver/corrupted job. Power the printer off and leave for 3 minutes. Disconnect any USB, Network or Wireless connections to the printer. In the case of wireless you will likely need to turn off the wireless in the office to test. Once everything is disconnected, restart the printer. If it comes to ready with no connections then 90% of the time it will be a corrupt job or wrong printer driver being used. You will need to track down the offending computer that is causing the issue.

If the unit still has the error after restarting with no connections then your next step is to go into the pre-boot menu and perform a partial clean of the harddrive which will reinstall the firmware. Keep in mind that you will lose any settings you have changed from default.

The firmware readme file http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/CLJM552_553/readme_cljM552_553_fs3.pdf

contains instructions on entering the preboot menu. Once in the preboot menu, go to administrator menu and select partial clean. Nothing will appear to happen, at that point use the back arrow to return to the menu that shows continue and select continue. Device will restart and reinstall the operating system from the backup file it creates.

Thanks for your quick reply!

As I restart the printer it will go through multiple initialization steps, after which it generates the error. I have the older printer model with no 'HP logo in the middle of the screen'. There is no touch screen as it's an older model. I have buttons like: OK, up or down arrow, home, numbers 1-9, previous folder, question mark. I tried to keep pressed 'OK' or 'OK+home' or 'OK+left' while rebooting, still it does not really enter the pre-boot stage.

I do that both without any inserted USB, as well as with inserted USB that contains the firmware driver, in either case I did not manage to enter the pre-boot. Any idea how to enter that?

Thank you in advance
