For anyone in Australia playing along at home I spoke to HP Australia by phone this morning ([Personal Information Removed]) - replacement printer being sent to me directly from HP. Will take up to 5 working days but thankfully we now have a solution (i.e. the failed firmware update cannot be fixed).

Fidèle client de HP, J'espère qu'il vont mettre tout en oeuvre pour trouver une solution.
Plus nous serons nombreux à déclarer le problème, plus nous aurons de poids.

Hi, there is no fix to the problem and HP (at least in France) decided to replace the printers. My replacement finally arrived this week.
