HP PageWide 377dw Multifunction Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I get this message with a blue screen randomly and the printer will then restart.  Printer software up to date.  It happens when the printer is not doing any jobs.  Haven't been able to understand any patterns.  Thoughts anyone??

I have had this problem a few times too during the past six months or so. My HP 377dw printer is approaching 5½ years old. It has had only light domestic usage.

HP discontinued the PageWide series of printers about a couple of years ago and I have recently had three tries through HP Support to get this problem resolved. Doing a full reset on the printer has occasionally brought it back to life for a while but then I get the error again and the cycle starts again.

HP are apparently unable to offer a repair service for this printer, given that it is a discontinued series.

I'm very disappointed because this printer has always been superb when it works, but mine has become unreliable and I have now bought an HP laser printer.

On further investigation, I now have some reason to suspect that the HP Smart app and/or the HP Print Service Plugin for Android may not be perfectly compatible with recent updates to the firmware in this printer.

I say this because after uninstalling both of those pieces of software from my Android device, and then installing Mopria software to handle my printing requests instead, I have had no further problems so far.

So my current hypothesis is that HP's own print service software is asking the 377dw to do something that it doesn't like, causing it to collapse with the blue screen error.

Given the current, and likely future, apparent lack of HP support for this printer and other smaller-scale PageWide models, it may be worth your while deleting —  as described above — the HP print service software from any Android device you're using, and installing Mopria's print service software instead.

Hi - I think you might be right as I use the android apps too!  Will give it a go and see what happens.  To be honest, thankfully all the printer does is restart at strange times and generally works.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Do come back here and say whether or not this works for you. It's still early days with me but so far I still haven't had any problems and I'm keeping my own fingers crossed.

Another thing that may have a bearing on this is your printer's Tray and Paper Management settings.

When printing from an Android device I often find that the printer wants to print from Tray 1 — which is no use to me as that is on the side of the printer and jammed up against a wall. Despite having set (through the printer's own control panel) my default tray to Tray 2, I still get this "load Tray 1" problem sometimes.

However, by setting the paper type for Tray 2 to Plain (instead of the Mid-Weight 96-110g type that I used to have it set to), that does seem to avoid the "Load paper into Tray 1" prompt.

If you want to try this,

• from the printer's control panel in its home position, pull the "blind" down from the top and then press the gear icon at top left for settings.

• Scroll through the list to Tray and Paper Management and press the arrow at the right.

• Under Paper Settings, "arrow right" and then...

— for Tray 1, set the paper to any type and any size;

— for Tray 2, I have Paper Size as A4 and Paper Type as Plain.

• After making these settings, press the home key on the printer's control panel and then try printing.
