HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

A few things seem to happening.  The unit repeatedly claims there is a paper jam, yet there is none to be found.

The unit will NOT shut down.  The spinning wheel of death for HOURS.  Eventually, I unplug the unit.  Then is says that the unit was not shut down properly.  During this, I frequently get the 0x6100004a error code.

Finally, I notice my ink cartridges do not slide over to the reloading position when the top is lifted.

Hi @GregBickel,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding issues with the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Inspect the Paper Path:

  • Open all accessible areas within the printer, such as the input and output trays, and examine for any tiny pieces of paper or debris.
  • Also, check the rear of the printer and the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  • Wait about 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Addressing Shutdown Problems

Perform a Full Reset:

  • Unplug the printer from the power source and wait about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in to ensure it performs a full reset before turning on.

Check for Firmware Update:

  • Sometimes issues like these are resolved with firmware updates. Check for updates via the HP Smart app or driver software on your computer.

Error Code 0x6100004a Resolution

System Reset and Clear Code:

  • Perform the full reset described above.
  • Ensure no objects or paper pieces are obstructing any moving parts inside the printer.

Firmware and Software Update:

  • Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date as older firmware can sometimes lead to error codes.

Ink Cartridge Movement and Access Issues

Check Cartridge and Carriage Area:

  • Make sure the carriage can move freely without obstructions. Remove and reinstall cartridges to ensure correct placement.

Manually Move Carriage:

  • With the printer powered off, try manually moving the carriage to the left and right to check for any blockages.

Perform a Mechanical Inspection:

  • Inspect for any loose parts or debris that might be interfering with the movement of the ink carriage.

I hope this helps.
