HP called me today to offer to fix my printer.

I had already installed the latest 20250311 firmware and fixed it yesterday.

I asked for a free toner to compensate for my issues. They said no - it's not under warranty.

Didn't feel like arguing the principle of the matter.

I have maybe 200 pages left of toner before it runs out.

Perhaps I'll keep it as an emergency spare.  Who knows.

What would you guys do if you already bought a more capable printer? Would you toss it out just to rid yourself of this draconian nonsense?

That’s sad to hear that they wouldn’t compensate for our troubles when it wasn’t even our fault.  HP support didn’t even notify me that a fix was online.  I’m not expecting a replacement printer to actually ship to me even though an order is in place.  Haven’t heard from HP since 3/14 with email, phone or text.  I like the printer, scanning function and app.  What would I do?  I’d use up the remaining 200 pages and then buy a quality knock-off cartridge from Amazon and turn off the firmware auto update.  Hit HP in their pocket where they live.  No excuse for poor support when it was their fault.

Yeah that's the problem - my version of the printer does not have the ability to turn off the updates - and it locks itself if it cannot "phone home" to report on my usage. I think the best way to stick it to them is to never buy their products again, and tell everyone else I know to do the same.  They didn't even want to ease the pain and at least try and remove the bad taste in my mouth from this experience.

Thinking about this further, God is the only one that is perfect and Earthly beings always make mistakes that can cause other people problems.  I’m thankful HP fixed the issue and we can move on to bigger and better challenges in life.  I still prefer the HP printer quality over the Canon, Epson and Brother printers that I have owned in the past.

my printer updated itself to that firmware code, but i don't see the checkbox Turn off Auto updates.

my printer is a m234dw only.

when yours updated did that option show up instantly?

I have the M234sdw printer and the check box always existed.  HP may not have added that feature to the dw printer or it is located in another menu on the web sever.    I would imagine that HP’s firmware release has improved from this issue to prevent this from happening again.

IIRC - there were several different iterations of these printers. They were functionally identical - however, the "dwe" models were about $50 cheaper due to the fact that they needed to be internet connected in order to function. Something along those lines. It's my suspicion that is why some models do not have the ability to disable firmware updates.

Maybe in retrospect, HP should go back to basics and just sell functional equipment instead of weaseling schemes to suck every last dollar from the consumable market. Perhaps they can realize that their experiment was a failure and will never gain customer acceptance.

I'm in the same boat, have downloaded latest driver 3 times now, rebooted pc and printer several times and no joy

Solved, had to update via the HP Smart app on pc before it would take effect, via admin page

As the OP for this thread, I am incredibly grateful for the truly dedicated and helpful people who have contributed to this thread. I am amazed that so much has been achieved by so few. Just goes to show what can be achieved against even the biggest of opponents.

As a result of your collective help, my printer too is now operational once more and considering it was only going to useful as a doorstop, I am very appreciative.
