macOS 10.15 Catalina

This AM I began getting the error code B8BBCA96 on my printer. All I can do is reboot. The printer comes back for a few minutes, but then the error code returns.

* What does this error code signify?

* What resolution options do I have?

Hi @lsfinn

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

The B8BBCA96 error code on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8730 typically indicates a firmware or hardware issue that causes the printer to become unresponsive.

Since rebooting only provides temporary relief, let's go through some troubleshooting steps.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Update Firmware

  • Go to HP’s support page and check for the latest firmware update.
  • Install it using HP Smart or HP Easy Start.

Check for Paper Jams or Hardware Issues

  • Open the printer and inspect for any loose parts or obstructions.
  • Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges.

Factory Reset the Printer

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
  • This will erase settings but may resolve the issue.

Thank you for your suggestions. Prior to receiving your note I did another orderly shutdown, removed power, and then powered up again. I have not had the problem since; so, have been unable to try any of the other suggestions you made. I have bookmarked these so that, if the problem returns, I will have them available to try.

That’s great to hear that the shutdown and power reset resolved the issue!

Bookmarking the troubleshooting steps was a smart move in case the problem resurfaces.

If anything else comes up—whether it's another technical hiccup or just a general question—I'm always here to help. Hopefully, your device keeps running smoothly!
