Brand new HP 6001 smart tank printer is full of black ink, but I still get error K. Tried the factory reset multiple times and the power off multiple times, but the error K keeps coming back.

Hi @Harvee1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Error K" on an HP Smart Tank printer typically indicates an issue with the black ink system. Given that you've already performed a factory reset and power cycles without resolving the issue, there are a few additional steps you can take to troubleshoot this problem:

Check the Ink Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure the black ink cartridge is correctly installed and seated properly in its slot.
  • Remove and reinsert the cartridge to ensure proper contact with the printer.

Inspect the Ink Cartridge and Printhead:

  • Check for any protective tapes or covers on the new cartridge that might not have been removed.
  • Examine the printhead and cartridge contacts for any ink build-up or debris. Clean them gently with a lint-free cloth if needed.

Run a Printhead Cleaning Cycle:

  • Access the printer's maintenance menu and run a printhead cleaning cycle. This can help if there are clogs or air bubbles in the ink lines.

Check the Ink Levels:

  • Ensure the ink levels are correctly recognized by the printer. Sometimes, the sensors may not accurately detect the ink levels. Double-check the ink levels physically.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve unexpected errors.

Check for Air in the Ink System:

  • If air has entered the ink system, it might cause ink flow issues. Follow the printer's manual to perform any recommended procedures for priming the ink system.

Contact HP Support:

  • If the error persists, it may indicate a hardware issue. Contact HP Support for further assistance. They can provide advanced troubleshooting steps or arrange for a repair if necessary.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Ensure there are no obstructions or paper jams in the printer that might be causing the error.

Cleaning the Printhead and Contacts

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.Open the printer to access the printhead and ink cartridges.
  2. Remove the black ink cartridge and inspect it for any visible damage or leaks.
  3. Clean the contacts on the cartridge and printhead gently using a lint-free cloth and distilled water. Make sure everything is dry before reinserting the cartridge.Reinsert the cartridge, close the printer, plug it back in, and turn it on.

Running a Printhead Cleaning Cycle

  1. On the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Settings" or "Maintenance" menu.Select "Tools" or "Maintenance", then choose "Clean Printhead".Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the cleaning cycle.

Updating Firmware

  1. Download the latest firmware update for your printer model from the HP Support website.Follow the instructions to install the firmware update on your printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
