HP Officejet Pro 8610
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

Printer was working fine until I replaced the cyan cartridge. I bought the correct HP cartridge (951) that I have always purchased.

After replacing I received error message: "The indicated cartridge is not intended for use in this printer." THEN I also replaced the yellow and immediately got the message: "The indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer. "

I spent another $114 on HP cartridges today and am getting the same message. The printer worked FINE before replacing the cartridge. I have tried to fix by turning off and on, cleaning printheads, etc., checking for firmware update. Nothing is working. I cannot do my work without a printer.

Connected to printer wirelessly, fyi.

Welcome to the HP Forums 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand there's an error message - "indicated cartridges are not intended for use in this printer.",

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you ensure genuine HP Ink cartridges are being used on the device?

Have you attempted to reset the ink cartridges and make sure the latch is down?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

Step 1: Make sure the ink cartridges are compatible

Make sure the newly installed ink cartridges are compatible with your printer and that they are unmodified, genuine HP ink cartridges.

HP recommends that you use genuine HP ink or toner supplies. HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you do not use genuine HP cartridges, the steps in this document might not resolve the issue. To check the authenticity of your cartridges, go to hp.com/go/anticounterfeit.

   NOTE:

Your printer might be enabled with dynamic security. Ink cartridges using a non-HP chip might not work, and those that work today might not work in the future. For more information, see Dynamic Security Feature Affecting Cartridges Using Non-HP Security Chip .

Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.

  1. Go to HP SureSupply.

  2. If necessary, select your country/region.

  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.

You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.

  • If the ink cartridge is compatible, continue with the steps in this document.

  • If the ink cartridge is not compatible, skip to the step in this document to replace the problem ink cartridge.

Step 2: Reseat the ink cartridges, and make sure latch is down

Make sure the ink cartridges are inserted correctly and the carriage latch is down.

  1. Turn on the printer.

  2. Place your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, and then pull to open the ink cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the left side of the printer. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before you proceed.

  3. Make sure that the colored dot on the ink cartridge label matches the colored dot on the carriage slot.

  4. Push in on the front of the ink cartridge to release it, and then pull it toward you to remove it from its slot.

  5. Inspect the ink cartridge for damage and its copper-colored ink cartridge contact for ink buildup or debris.

  6. Carefully reinsert the ink cartridge into its slot, and then push the ink cartridge forward until it clicks into place.

       CAUTION:

Do not lift the latch handle on the carriage to insert ink cartridges. Doing so could cause the printhead or ink cartridges to be incorrectly seated, which could damage the print mechanism and cause printing problems.

  7. Repeat these steps for other ink cartridges, if necessary.

  8. Make sure that the carriage latch is down. If the carriage latch is up, press it down until it clicks.

  9. Close the ink cartridge access door.

  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

  • If the issue persists, continue to the next step.

I have two printers, one at my home office and one at my work office that are experiencing the same problem.  Both are HP OfficeJet Pro's, one is 8600 plus and the other 8610.  The ink ran low in one printer, I went to put a new HP cartridge in and I got the message " The following cartridges are not intended for use in this printer".  I have always used the same 950 adn 951 cartridges from Costco.  I tried the new cartridges in the other printer and got the same error.  I then bought new cartridges from office depot. Same error both printers. Then I bought new cartridges from walmart, same error.  What is going on with my printers?

KJANDER - After  A LOT of effort, I solved my printer problem. It has to be solved by hooking your computer up to a Windows-based machine (I have a MAC, so this was a pain for me). (So ridiculous that HP can't solve this through a MAC since so many people have MACS and they say the printer works with a MAC.) Anyways, I finally found someone on the phone at HP who knew the problem--the cartridges you've bought probably have "z10" imprinted on the bottom front of the box. This is fairly new--HP has, for some reason, changed the cartridges to work only in the US but our printers aren't configured correctly. So, you either need to find cartridges that aren't z10 cartridges (ALL of the ones I purchased are) OR have your printer reconfigured by having someone at tech support take over your printer, through a Windows machine, and reconfigure for the updated cartridges. I think I ended up having a supervisor help because, since I had to call back after finding a way to connect to a Windows machine, the person I first talked to had no idea what I was talking about. Figuring this out took multiple calls to HP and escalating after I had about 3 people tell me I had to buy a new printer--but that they would give me a "great deal." Good luck.

If you are reading this, don't feel alone.  I've downloaded all their "latest" drivers and firmware update to resolve this issue.  Going on the phone is useless with the lack of anyone that isn't as robotic in response as their little computer assisted automatic nonsense....  Bottom line, I buy genuine HP ink off Amazon and it's had me for 3 times and several hours waste my time with no resolve on the phone, via email or their computer auto response nonsense.  I will have to call it a loss after tonight and get another printer...........not HP for sure!
