Deskjet 2510 series
macOS 10.12 Sierra

I am receiving an error message that says :

You need to install software to use this printer. To install the software, choose App Store… from the Apple menu. If the software for your printer isn’t available in App Store…, contact the manufacturer of your printer.

Curious.  Did the download, actually download and install the correct build for your OS  (  macOS 10.12 ) ?

File from the site is called:   Deskjet-2510-series_v12.23.0.dmg

For a build that was released in:  Oct 22, 2014, there could be something wrong striving to interwork with your macOS 10.12 version.

Techinical Support may be a good call.

In general, your printer, as a multi-functional device, needs drivers, and software to "fully utilize" the multiple functions that the device is capable of ( Print / Copy / Scan / Fax ).

Scanning function, is dependent on the software configuration.

Fax ( if device has that function), those settings can be defined via the printer software installed on the computer.

Be it a Mac, or Windows machine, that basic premise does not change.

If the Apple App store is not listing the software for your machine, you can also download and install if from support.hp.com;

> -chose your printer (  Deskjet 2510 (??) );

>  choose the menu option [Software and Drivers];

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-deskjet-2510-all-in-one-printer-series/5157438

-the web page will automatically detect your computer operating system; change as needed ( Windows, Mac )

-download the [  HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers ] software file, by selecting the big orange [DOWNLOAD] button.

-install software, follow instructions.

-enjoy your martini ( shaken, not stirred ), during installation.

-life is good!

I have already tried this and I have now gone through the process twice. After I finished, the page said that my new printer had been added to my computer and that it was ready for use, but I still recieved the same error.

Yes it did. I managed to fix the problem by removing my printer from the queue and then adding it again. Thank you for your time though!!
