Hi @LDMC,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your iPad. Let's go through a few troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:
1. Ensure Your iPad and Printer Are Connected to the Same Network
Make sure your iPad and your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. AirPrint requires both devices to be on the same network.
2. Restart Your Devices
Sometimes, simply restarting your devices can resolve connectivity issues.
- Restart your iPad: Press and hold the power button until you see the slider, then slide to power off. Turn it back on after a few seconds.
- Restart your printer: Turn off the printer, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
3. Check Printer Status
Ensure your printer is ready and not showing any error messages or warnings on its display panel.
4. Update Your iPad and Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
Make sure your iPad is running the latest version of iOS.
- Update iOS: Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install any available updates.
Also, check if your printer firmware is up-to-date. You can do this via the HP Smart app or the printer's embedded web server.
5. Reconfigure AirPrint
Try reconfiguring the AirPrint settings on your iPad.
- Forget the Printer: Go to Settings > Wi-Fi, find your printer in the list of connected devices, and select Forget This Device.
- Re-add the Printer: After forgetting the device, re-add it by selecting your printer from the available AirPrint printers list when you attempt to print.
6. Reset Network Settings on Your iPad
If none of the above steps work, you can try resetting the network settings on your iPad. Note that this will erase all saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords.
- Go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
7. Check AirPrint Settings on Printer
Ensure that AirPrint is enabled on your printer:
- Open the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone.
- Go to Printer Settings and make sure AirPrint is turned on.
8. Try Printing from Another App
Sometimes, the issue may be with the specific app you're trying to print from. Try printing a simple document from another app, like Notes or Safari.
9. Reinstall Printer on iPad
Delete the printer from the iPad's list of known printers and reinstall it:
- When attempting to print, tap on the printer selection, find your HP Color Laser MFP 178nw, and remove it if possible.
- Retry the printing process and let the iPad rediscover the printer.
10. Check for Firewall or Router Issues
Ensure that your router or firewall settings are not blocking communication between your iPad and the printer. This can sometimes happen with strict security settings.
Refer to this document: HP Color Laser MFP 178nw User manual

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
