The printer displays this error code. Restarting, unplugging and removing the toner cartridges did not help. It will not connect to the network, so I can't diagnose it. It has an extended warranty through American Express.

The error persists even when connected by USB cable. Also, per a technician I spoke to, that error is because the printer is not able to access the toner cartridges. I took them all out, put them back in. No change, These are not new, HP cartridges that have been fine for months.

I have the same issue with my HP Color Laserjet 4301fdw. I can't get to the EWS because the error shows up before it can get an ip address. I can't go to the printer menu because this error comes up before I can get there. There is literally nothing I can do right now to get to its settings. Is there a manual way to update the firmware or do a reset without the EWS or the printer's menu?

I spoke with a repair technician today. He said that means the printer is not communicating with one or more toner cartridges. Since my cartridges are not new and the printer has worked fine until now, the conclusion is that the printer can no longer read/communicate with the cartridges. This is apparently too expensive to bother fixing. I was unable to find any useful information online about the error code and HP “support” was equally useless.

Hello @docmkk56
Thanks for replying.

Thank you for sharing everything so clearly—and I’m truly sorry your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw is locked by error code F0.01.D5.19. I appreciate the steps you’ve already taken, including removing and reseating the toner cartridges, restarting, and checking connections.
Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to help resolve the cartridge communication issue.
Step-by-step recovery for error code F0.01.D5.19
1. Power reset with cartridge isolation
- Turn off the printer
- Remove all toner cartridges
- Unplug the power cord and wait 2 minutes
- Reconnect power and turn on the printer without cartridges
- Wait until the display shows “Missing cartridges”
- Insert one cartridge at a time, starting with black
- Observe whether the error returns after a specific cartridge is inserted
- If the error reappears after a specific cartridge, that unit may be triggering the fault
2. Clean cartridge contacts and internal connectors
- Power off and unplug the printer
- Use a dry, lint-free cloth to gently clean the gold contacts on each cartridge
- Inspect the cartridge bays for dust or toner buildup
- Avoid using alcohol or liquids
- Reinsert the cartridges firmly and evenly
3. Perform a full factory reset
- On the printer control panel:
- Go to Settings > Maintenance > Restore Settings > Restore All Factory Defaults
- Confirm and allow the printer to restart
- This clears any firmware-level lockouts or miscommunication flags
4. Update firmware via USB
- Visit the HP Software and Driver Downloads page for MFP 3301fdw
- Download the latest firmware update utility
- Connect the printer via USB to your computer
- Run the firmware updater and follow the on-screen instructions
- Restart the printer after update completes
5. Test with alternate toner cartridges (if available)
- If you have access to another set of compatible HP toner cartridges, try installing them
- This helps confirm whether the issue is cartridge-related or internal to the printer
Let me know how the printer responds after these steps. If the error persists even with clean contacts and a firmware refresh, the issue may be tied to the cartridge interface board or internal sensor alignment.
You’ve done everything right by staying observant—I’ll be here to guide you further.
If my response helped, please mark it as an Accepted Solution! ✅ It helps others and spreads support. 💙 Also, tapping "Yes" on "Was this reply helpful?" makes a big difference! Thanks! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thank you for the suggestion. After removing the cartridges and plugging the printer in then restarting, the error message was unchanged. So the machine does not even register that there are no toner cartridges. Also, my toner cartridges have no contacts.

Hello @docmkk56, thanks for the quick update.
Thank you for the detailed follow-up—and I’m truly sorry the error persists even after isolating the cartridges and restarting. The fact that your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw doesn’t register missing cartridges and shows error F0.01.D5.19 regardless of cartridge presence suggests a deeper fault in the cartridge interface system.
If the issue remains
Given the symptoms and your extended warranty coverage, this may require a service-level resolution. The cartridge interface board or sensor array may have failed, and replacement of internal components is typically not cost-effective outside warranty.
You’ve done everything right—methodical, patient, and precise. If you decide to pursue service, your American Express extended warranty may cover repair or replacement.
Keep me posted if you need any further assistance.
Regards,
