I had a color cartridge that needed to be replaced due to low ink levels.  I replaced it with a black only cartridge.  I now get the message "One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged.  Install or replace the affected cartridge. "  After I got the message I updated the printer firmware, but the message remained.  I am on a wireless connection.  I tried all the suggestions on the HP website regarding resetting the printer, turning it on/off, cleaning the contacts, etc to no avail.  The printer is approximately 5 years old.  I also tried un-installing/re-installing thecartridge numerous times. Very frustrating!

Hello @toonzee, I am the @Chimney_83. It looks like you were interacting with @Rainbow23, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

Thanks for the reply and glad to hear that the issue was resolved by installing a new color cartridge.

Not all printers are capable of printing in black with some cartridges being empty.

Printers that use 4 or more cartridges, require some ink to be there on all cartridges to be able to print in black only.

Recommend you go through this HP Article to know more. (though your printer is not listed in the article the limitation is applicable to your printer as well.)

Hi @toonzee,

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.

I understand that you get a "One or more cartridges appear to be missing or damaged. Install or replace the affected cartridge." error message on your HP Deskjet 3520 e-All-in-One Printer.

This issue could occur if the electrical contacts on the cartridge or the printer are defective.

Let's go through a few steps to troubleshoot this issue.

And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Ink Cartridge Error

Let me know how this works.

You have a good day ahead.

Hello Rainbow23....

I was under the assumption that the printer could accept only a black ink cartridge, but apparently not.  After I installed an additional new color cartridge, the error message went away and is printing fine.

Please let me know if my assumption is wrong.  Thank you.

Hello Chimney_83~

Thank you for your quick response!   Although my printer was not in the list of required ink in four cartridges, I accept your comment that that is the probabal solution.
