HP OfficeJet 4650 All-in-One Printer

My printer is continuously telling me there is a carriage jam. Nothing I do will clear the error. There are no visible obstructions, ink is installed correctly, and the carriage moves freely from side to side.

Hi @LH310,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet 4650 is displaying a "carriage jam" error message despite no visible obstructions, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Power Cycle the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for about 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check for Obstructions Again

  • Ensure there are no small paper scraps or debris inside the printer that might be causing the jam.
  • Remove any installed ink cartridges and check for obstructions in the carriage area.

Inspect the Carriage Path

  • Open the printer's top cover to access the carriage.
  • Manually move the carriage to the far right and then to the far left to ensure it can move freely.
  • Look for any stickers or tape that may have been left on the carriage or in the printer that could be blocking movement.

Reset the Printer

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
  2. After 30 seconds, reconnect the power cord.
  3. Turn the printer back on.

Check Ink Cartridges

  • Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.
  • Verify that the cartridges are compatible and not empty.

Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing issues.

Firmware Update

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or the HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
