My printer is continuously telling me there is a carriage jam. Nothing I do will clear the error. There are no visible obstructions, ink is installed correctly, and the carriage moves freely from side to side.

Hi @LH310,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP OfficeJet 4650 is displaying a "carriage jam" error message despite no visible obstructions, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.
Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
Check for Obstructions Again
- Ensure there are no small paper scraps or debris inside the printer that might be causing the jam.
- Remove any installed ink cartridges and check for obstructions in the carriage area.
Inspect the Carriage Path
- Open the printer's top cover to access the carriage.
- Manually move the carriage to the far right and then to the far left to ensure it can move freely.
- Look for any stickers or tape that may have been left on the carriage or in the printer that could be blocking movement.
Reset the Printer
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.
- After 30 seconds, reconnect the power cord.
- Turn the printer back on.
Check Ink Cartridges
- Remove and reinsert the ink cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.
- Verify that the cartridges are compatible and not empty.
Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to diagnose and resolve printing issues.
Firmware Update
- Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or the HP website.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
