OfficeJet Pro 6968
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When I try to print any type of document, I get the message "Error printing on HP4ED4C1 (HP Officejet Pro 6960). The printer couldn't print (name of document)." Then I find the document in the print queue.

Everything else works perfectly on the unit. Prints internal documents perfectly. I have literally spent 6 hours trying EVERYTHING. Nothing fixes the problem.

Hi @redavide

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you

Due to the current global COVID-19 situation, we're seeing an influx of customers coming in for support. We appreciate your patience.

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor

Download HP Print and Scan Doctor and run the program. It will automatically diagnose and fix any printing issues.

For more information, go to https://support.hp.com/us-en/topic/printscandoctor

Delete job files and restart

  • 1. Turn off the printer using the power button and then unplug the printer power cord from the power outlet.

  • 2. In Windows, search for and open Services .

  • 3. In the Services window, right-click Print Spooler, and then select Stop .

Service window the Print Spooler service selected from the Name list and the Stop selection called out.

  • 4. After the service stops, close the Services window.

  • 5. In Windows, search for and open C:WindowsSystem32SpoolPRINTERS.

  • 6. Delete all files in the PRINTERS folder.

  • 7. Shut down your computer.

  • 8. Connect the printer power cord to the power outlet, and then turn on the printer.

  • 9. Turn on the computer, and then try to print

I had already tried all of the standard solutions that you suggested and none of them worked.

Finally, I found (on non-HP website) that it was necessary to add another printer port with my printer's IP address and the problem was solved after hours and hours of trial and error.

Clearly, HP should have had such a basic solution on its website. And because it didn't, I was forced to spend hours of my time working on this ridiculous bug . . . .

I should also add that a few weeks ago, I went to install non-HP ink cartridges in my printer and although they had always worked in the past, they didn't work this time. Again, I spent a LOT of time trying to resolve the problem. As it turns out, HP had updated my printer software (without notifying me) so that non-HP cartridges would not work any longer.

My next printer will not be an HP product. My $75 printer has ended up costing me hundreds of dollars in lost time.

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which are refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why it's not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

Refer to: Dynamic Security Feature Affecting Cartridges Using Non-HP Security Chip
