Every print job sent to the Deskjet Plus from Windows 10 64 via wireless results in a failure lots of blinking lights but no error number. I have tried soft reset multiple times without success. I would attach a photo of the control panel if I could but do not see any option to do so.

@jsauser11, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since your HP DeskJet Plus 4158 printer fails to print over wireless and shows blinking lights without an error number, here are a few troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue:
Check the Blinking Light Pattern
The blinking lights on the control panel usually indicate a specific error. Here are common ones:
- Power + Wireless + Resume Blinking → Printer not connected to Wi-Fi.
- Power + Wireless + Error Blinking → Paper jam, ink issue, or connection problem.
Perform a Hard Reset
Since a soft reset didn't help, try this:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from power.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
- Try printing again.
Reconnect Printer to Wi-Fi
Since you're printing wirelessly, reset and reconnect:
1. Restore Network Settings:
- Press and hold the Wireless (📶) and Cancel (❌) buttons for 5 seconds.
- The Wireless light will blink → Network settings are reset.
2. Reconnect to Wi-Fi:
- Open HP Smart on your PC.
- Click Add Printer and follow the instructions.
Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
1. Uninstall the current printer driver:
- Go to Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the HP DeskJet Plus 4158 → Remove device.
2. Download and install the latest driver from HP website.
Print Using a USB Cable (Test)
If USB printing works, the issue is wireless. If USB also fails, the printer itself has a problem.
Run HP Print and Scan Doctor
- Download HP Print and Scan Doctor from here.
- Run it and check for errors.
I hope this helps. 🚀
Take care and have a good day.

Tried all of these steps, and I still have the problem.
Uninstalled and reinstalled with USB only, and sending a document to the printer it begins to print (about 1" of the top of the document), but then does the many flashing lights error. A single push of the power button for less than a second brings it back, and it then proceeds to eject the partially printed page, recovers, and prints the document fully. Based on that, I guess there is something mechanically wrong with the printer. I just returned from 4.5 month out of country, and the printer was powered down during that time. The error happened on first power up after that, and continues.
Description of the control panel (since a photo cannot be posted)
Resume button yellow light
Information button white light
Wireless button blue light
Power button white light
Second light to the right of the tri color symbol yellow
Exclamation point is LCD display to "Check the HP Smart software.
When Printer status is selected in HP Smart, the error is "Improper shutdown".

Hi @jsauser11,
Thank you for the response.
It looks like your HP DeskJet Plus 4158 has encountered a hardware issue possibly caused by being powered down for an extended period. The "Improper shutdown" error suggests the printer is stuck in an error state. Since you've tried software fixes already, let's focus on hardware troubleshooting:
Perform a Full Power Reset
Turn off the printer.
Unplug it from power and remove the USB cable (if connected).
Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds to drain residual charge.
Plug it back in and turn it on.
Try printing again.
Check for Paper or Cartridge Issues
Open the printer and inspect for any jammed paper or debris.
Remove both ink cartridges and reinsert them securely.
If the issue persists, try replacing the cartridges.
Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults
Refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.
Test with Another Power Outlet & Adapter
If you have a spare HP-compatible power adapter, test with that.
Ensure the wall outlet is providing stable power.
Try a Different USB Port or Cable
If USB printing fails again, try another port or cable.
If printing works after a power button press, the issue might be power-related.
I hope this helps.

Hi. Tried all of the above. Still getting the error on occasion. I did find a 12mmx6mmx1.5mm black rubber pad with two sided tape on one side that appears to have been ejected from the printer. Any idea where it might of come from internally and could that be the cause of the issue?
