My certificate has expired and I have tried the various recommended steps to update with no success.
1. Power down printer and router and restart.
2. Remove printer, power cycle, and re-install.
3. Update firmware: downloaded firmware update but when I open the image I receive the message: The application "Finder" does not have permission to open "(null)."
4. Go to printer webpage and manually update certificate: webpage never responds.
5. Remove printer and use HP Easy Start to re-install.
I love this printer - it has been essentially error free since I bought it new and was working perfectly until this happened.
UPDATE: After hours of doing the updates and cycling power on both printer and Mac many times, I was finally able to reach the printer webpage and manually update the certificate. Cycled the printer and it now works. Given all the variables I am not sure what finally "caught" but I am glad to have it back.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
We completely understand how disheartening it must have felt to see your reliable printer suddenly stop responding, the screen frozen, the page unresponsive, and that annoying certificate warning flashing in your face. We’re thrilled to hear that, after your persistence and multiple power cycles, you were finally able to reach the printer webpage and update the certificate.
It’s always a relief when the familiar hum of your HP LaserJet Pro M402dn fills the room again, printing smoothly like it did on day one.
Thank you for your patience and for sticking with it. Your determination paid off!
If anything else crops up, we’re here to help you get things back to running seamlessly.
